One of the main reasons why Costa Rica is such a popular destination for adventure tourism is its incredible natural wonders. The country is home to a vast array of ecosystems, including rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, and beaches. Visitors can explore these diverse landscapes through activities such as hiking, canyoning, diving and rafting. Costa Rica's rivers offer some of the best whitewater rapids in the world. Rafting is an exhilarating way to experience the country's natural beauty while getting an adrenaline rush.

Sustainable Tourism

Another reason why Costa Rica is such a popular destination for adventure tourism is its commitment to sustainable tourism. The country has made a concerted effort to preserve its natural resources while still allowing visitors to enjoy them. Many adventure tourism activities in Costa Rica are designed to be eco-friendly, such as hiking, birdwatching, and surfing. Visitors can also stay at eco-lodges and participate in conservation efforts, such as turtle nesting programs. This emphasis on sustainability has earned Costa Rica a reputation as a leader in responsible tourism.

When we were there in 2022, we stayed in an eco-lodge in La Fortuna, which was an amazing experience. The lodge was located in the surroundings of the town, surrounded by snakes, monkeys, hummingbirds, and sloths.

While speaking with tour guides in Marino Ballena National Park, I was amazed by the new mentality of the people there. They recognize their natural treasures as the most precious possession and asset in the country. As a result, people no longer exploit nature with harmful activities for their ecosystems. Instead, they work in tourism, showcasing Costa Rica's natural wonders and educating people to respect nature.

My Selection of National Parks and locations in Costa Rica

Disclaimer: I'm not saying that they are the best national parks in Costa Rica, because there are many. However, during our three-week stay, we were unable to visit every single one.

I did not mention Corcovado National Park because we were unable to go there due to bad weather conditions. Although we waited two days to take a tour looking for jaguars, it did not work out. However, I still believe that Corcovado is a must-see, although I cannot speak from personal experience.

Marino Ballena National Park

Marino Ballena National Park is one of the most stunning destinations in Costa Rica. It is home to a diverse range of marine life, including dolphins, whales, and sea turtles. Visitors can take snorkeling and diving tours to explore the park's coral reefs and underwater caves. The park is also home to a stunning sandbar that resembles the shape of a whale's tail, making it a popular spot for swimming and taking photos.

Cahuita National Park

Cahuita National Park is another must-visit destination in Costa Rica. Located on the Caribbean coast, the park is home to some of the country's most beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Visitors can explore the park's trails, which wind through dense rainforests and lead to secluded beaches. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including howler monkeys, sloths, and iguanas, making it a great destination for nature lovers.

Volcano Arenal National Park

I highly recommend visiting the Volcano Arenal National Park during your trip to Costa Rica. It's a fascinating destination that you won't want to miss. At the park, you'll have the opportunity to see the Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and explore its trails. You'll also be able to witness the volcano's activity from a safe distance. Additionally, the park has hot springs that are perfect for unwinding after a day full of adventure activities or hiking.

Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park is another must-visit destination in Costa Rica. Located on the Caribbean coast, the park is home to a vast array of wildlife, including sea turtles, monkeys, sloths, and more. The park is known for its turtle nesting sites, where visitors can witness the incredible sight of sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach. In addition to turtle watching, visitors can explore the park's network of canals, which offer a unique perspective on the park's lush rainforest and wildlife.

Tortuguero is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with over 300 species of birds found in the park. The park's waterways are home to a variety of aquatic species, including manatees, crocodiles, and freshwater fish. Visitors can take boat tours of the canals to spot these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

In addition to wildlife viewing, Tortuguero also offers opportunities for adventure activities such as hiking and kayaking. The park's trails wind through dense rainforest and offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also take guided kayaking tours of the canals to explore the park's waterways and wildlife up close.

Located on the southern Caribbean coast, this small fishing village offers a more laid-back and authentic Costa Rican experience. Visitors can hike through the nearby Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, go snorkeling or kayaking in the calm waters, or simply relax on the beach and enjoy the local cuisine.
