My camera gear 2020
The question that I always get asked is, what camera gear I use. First of all, I want to point out that I don't carry everything every single time I go somewhere. It depends on, what I need for the trip. I'm writing about everything that I have and not about what I carry. For that purpose, I've already planned to write another article.
Secondly, I want to emphasize you don’t need expensive and professional camera gear to do photography. I don’t want to discourage you, I want rather stimulate your passion for photography by writing about my experiences. Many people lost interest in photography due to the huge number of people: bloggers, photographers, filmmakers, etc, who use the best cameras and lenses on the market. You may think you need to take great pictures. I won’t lie. The better the camera you have, the better picture you take under the same conditions. But it doesn't mean you can't take awesome pictures with an entry-level camera or with your smartphone.
Your camera does not define you as an artist. Your work does. Cameras are tools you have at your disposal to bring your ideas to life. They are simply tools. So, here is my list;
Canon 5d mark IV
This camera has everything and it’s very versatile. You can use it for weddings, astrophotography, landscapes, etc. It’s the perfect all around camera.
Pros
Ergonomics
Battery life
Image quality
Good High ISO performance
Autofocus Dual Pixel
Fast burst speed considering the 30 megapixels Two card slots 4K video
Cons:
No Internal image stabilization
Heavy
Canon EOS R
I have to say when Canon announced this camera I was skeptic until the day I tested it. I took it for commercial photography on a trip and I instantly fell in love with it. After using it for the first time, I bought one two months later. It's pretty much a mirrorless 5D mark IV but with the pros of a mirrorless camera and amazing all-new RF lenses. I do not own native lenses for this camera but I'm sure I'm getting a couple of them in the future.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
This was my first full frame Canon lens. It's the best all around lens you can buy for any camera system. It's awesome for commercial photography, travel, landscapes, portraits, you name it! It's sharp for a zoom lens, fast and weather sealed. It performs extremely well in low light conditions but it doesn't have image stabilization. Get only this lens, travel the world and you’ll never look back.
Pros
All around lens
Weather sealed
Sharp
Image quality
Cons
No image stabilization
Heavy
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM
This is the sharpest 35mm lens on the market. Sharp out to the corners at f/1.4. I use it for environmental portraits and low light pictures. It's maybe my favorite focal length.
Pros
Sharp, sharp and sharp
Beautiful bokeh
Image quality
Weather sealed
Cons
Expensive compare to the third party alternatives
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM
I have to say, in terms of size and weight it's very good if you compare it with third-party equivalents. It's lighter than the Sigma and the same size as the Tamron. I use it for pretty much everything, landscapes, adventure, travel, portraits, etc. It is a very versatile lens and the background compression is amazing.
Pros
Image stabilization
Fast
Sharp
Weather sealed
Cons
Big for traveling
Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
I have to be honest. I don't use it a lot. Only when I'm taking exclusively portraits, and that's not very often. When I'm hiking or traveling I need normally something wider. That's why my 35mm is my favorite lens for this kind of situation. There is nothing to complain about this lens because it is an amazing professional lens, very sharp, amazing build quality but it's not weather sealed and doesn’t fit my needs very well
Drone Mavic 2 Pro
This Drone is maybe the best all around drone out in the market to date. It is easy to fly and it has an amazing camera. It’s also very portable for the quality it delivers.
MacBook Pro 16” 2019
This is the laptop that I use for photo and video editing.
DJI Ronin S
A couple of months ago I bought a Ronin SC for my Canon EOS R and I had a lot of troubles due to the weight from my lens with the ND variable filter attached to it. I sold it and I got the Ronin S, a professional rugged and bulky gimbal, which I can also use with my 5D. Perfect!
AquaTech Elite Housing (5D mark IV)
This is an amazing piece of technology. I used it to take pictures of dolphins in Madeira, Portugal. In the beginning, I was scared of jumping into the water with a professional DSLR in my hand! But it really works. After a couple of days, I lost that feeling and I started to enjoy the experience and got focus on taking pictures.
